A few days ago, Twitter user AnneComics posted a photo of what seems to be a brand new What If…? poster that was seen in a mall. The poster featured alternate versions of fan-favorite MCU superheroes in a group formation, as well as the first look at Uatu the Watcher, the omniscient alien being who watches over the universe in the comics. Perhaps what is most interesting about the image is the text written at bottom of it that reads, “Guardians of the Multiverse” - such a tagline could be hinting at a massive multiverse concept that is soon to come.

Considering that What If…? will be based on the comic books of the same name, we can assume that the show will explore the branched realities where the fates of the Marvel characters are different than what we are familiar with. For example, in the What If…? comic books, one storyline has the Fantastic Four recruiting Spider-Man as a new member, while another has Loki wielding Mjolnir instead of his brother Thor. There’s even a storyline where Wolverine gets killed by The Hulk in an insane battle, and his adamantium skeleton is shown littered over the battleground. Needless to say, the possibilities are endless with a multiverse concept.

With WandaVision having played around with time-manipulating plots and upcoming titles like Loki, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania, and even Spider-Man: No Way Home expected to follow suit, it’s clear that Phase 4 is going to run with the whole multiverse concept, with no holds barred. What If…? won’t be an exception to the trend either -  the trailer confirms the story will focus on an alternate universe where Peggy Carter is Captain Britain, T’Challa is Star-Lord, and Captain America is a freaking zombie.

Several MCU actors will lend their voice to the series, including Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Natalie Portman, and even the late Chadwick Boseman, who will appear posthumously. It will be interesting to see what What If…? brings to the table and if it will set up any of the future works to come.

What If…? is expected to premiere on Disney Plus in summer 2021.
